TEACHERS, PRINCIPALS, SUPERINTENDENTS AND PARENTS: |
COURSE OUTLINE includes the offering of on-demand multi-media videos and other resources which focus on many principles of good character not limited to the following examples: courage, perseverance, loyalty, diligence, teamwork, gratitude, dependability and integrity.
Course Name & Description:
Michigan Assemblies dot Com is a cloud-based resource providing on-demand multi-media content promoting good character as a bridge between academic success and setting students on a trajectory for achieving honorable life goals. There will be a broad range of content involving principles of good character; this Site is geared toward influencing G6-12 students. The premise of why this Site has been created is for students to be encouraged by presenting them with dynamic stories and concepts throughout history as a means to the end that they develop respect for the rich experiences that human beings have had throughout the centuries and
diverse cultures. Moreover, students will be able to watch the videos independently, in small assemblies, such as in a classroom of 25 students or in large assemblies, such as in a gymnasium or auditorium. Each video or series of videos, will be concise (about 10
minutes in duration) and will be supplemented with follow up questions, activities/projects and resources for assessment. The
learning standards which students will be engaged with are not necessarily limited to the following list: (1) trustworthiness; (2)
respect; (3) responsibility; (4) perseverance; (5) fairness; (6) caring; (7) courage and (8) citizenship.
Resource Requirements: Teachers, Parents, Administrators, and Counsellors have the option for how they want to utilize the
resources on this Site, in terms of what is described in the Course Description above. If they want to show it at home with just one
student and perhaps his/her family/friends, then that would only require the basic computer setup which most people already own.
However, to present the content in a classroom or some other large room, then appropriate audio/video technology, as well as an up-to date computer with fast access to the cloud (internet), will all be necessary to make these virtual school assembly experiences successful. Furthermore, the successful impact that the multi-media content can potentially have on students will be in large part contingent upon the ability for each student to be able to clearly see and hear what is being presented during each virtual assembly.
Consequently, it is imperative that teachers and administrators prepare prior to any large scale viewing of the content in order to
make sure that all of the audio/video hardware/software resources are working correctly. NOTE: the most common resource/technology issue that will arise is NOT having a good audio setup which includes a quality speaker system which correctly amplifies the sound coming form the computer which is streaming the multi-media videos. Finally, Mr. Egan can offer a limited amount of IT support to anyone who contacts him prior to utilizing Michigan Assemblies dot Com (MAC).
Student Learner Responsibilities:
Students are expected to take the learning opportunities provided by MAC seriously and to hopefully appreciate the diversity of character topics which can enrich their lives. Assessments will be designed in such a way that the adults facilitating a learning experience with MAC can have options in determining whether or not participating students have taken a particular learning experience seriously.
Instructor Information:
Mr. Egan has taught full-time in public and private classrooms and devotes significant time to volunteering in nursing homes and with the Michigan Department of Corrections. He has also spent many years in Michigan working as a substitute teacher and tutor. He is no longer a classroom teacher; yet, he is completing a master’s degree in educational technology, through Central Michigan University’s Global Campus, with the intention of harnessing adequate knowledge in order to gain strategies which will support the marketing of educational resources, such as Michigan Assemblies dot Com.
